If your Shopify store prices jewellery from the gold rate, every rate change makes your catalogue a little more wrong. Shopify has no built-in way to tie a product's price to a live metal rate, so most jewellers either recalculate prices by hand or leave them stale and absorb the difference.
This guide shows how to update gold prices on Shopify automatically: what product data you need first, which rate to price from, how the pricing formula fits together, and how to automate it without a bad number reaching your storefront.
Why updating gold prices by hand breaks down
Recalculating one ring is easy. Recalculating a catalogue is not. Each product has its own weight, purity, making charge, wastage and stones, and every one of them has to be redone whenever the rate moves. In practice this means prices get updated once a week, or only for best-sellers. The rest of the catalogue drifts, and you either undercharge when gold rises or lose sales when it falls.
Automation fixes the repetition, but only if the inputs are right. Get those in place first.
Step 1: Record the metal weight, not the gross weight
The rate is multiplied by the weight of the metal, so that is the number each product needs. A 12g ring holding a 2g diamond has a metal weight of 10g. Stones, beads, enamel and packaging are priced separately, never by the gram of gold.
Each product also needs its purity: 24K, 22K, 18K or 14K for gold, or 999, 925, 900 or 800 for silver. Without weight and purity, no tool can price a product correctly, so fill these in before you automate anything.
Step 2: Choose the right rate (IBJA, MCX or spot)
There is no single "gold price", and the one you choose changes your prices:
- IBJA (India Bullion and Jewellers Association) publishes the benchmark rates many Indian jewellers quote to customers.
- MCX is India's commodity exchange, where gold and silver futures trade through the day.
- Spot is the international market price. Converted into rupees, it usually does not match Indian rates, because Indian prices include costs such as import duty.
If you sell in rupees and your customers compare you with local jewellers, price from IBJA. If you sell in dollars, pounds or euros, the spot rate converted into your store currency is the usual reference.
Step 3: Write your pricing formula once
A jewellery price is built from parts. A typical formula includes:
- Metal value: the rate for the purity, multiplied by the metal weight
- Wastage: a percentage of the metal value
- Making charge: a fixed amount, an amount per gram, or a percentage
- Stone value: a flat amount per product
- Margin, tax and rounding: applied in the order your business uses
Write it down before you choose a tool. If you cannot explain your own formula line by line, an app cannot apply it consistently either. Our guide on how to calculate gold jewellery price walks through each part.
Step 4: Automate it with a Shopify app
Because Shopify cannot do this natively, you need an app that fetches the rate, applies your formula and writes the new prices. We built KaratSync: Live Gold Prices for exactly this, and it works like this:
- Install KaratSync: Live Gold Prices from the Shopify App Store.
- Tag the products you want priced from the metal rate. Products without the tag, or without weight and purity, are left alone.
- Set the formula once: purity, wastage, making charge, stone value, margin, tax and rounding.
- Open the preview. Every product shows its new price with the full working: the rate used, metal value, each charge and the rounded figure. Nothing is written until you apply it.
- Apply, and KaratSync keeps the tagged products updated on a schedule. Every run is recorded in History and can be rolled back.
For stores selling in rupees, KaratSync uses India's IBJA benchmark rates first, then MCX, then spot, separately for gold and silver, and shows which source each price came from. Stores in other currencies get the spot rate converted into the store currency.
Step 5: Protect yourself from a bad rate
Automation is only safe if a wrong number cannot reach your store. Whatever tool you use, check what it does when the rate feed is stale or jumps unexpectedly. KaratSync blocks the update rather than guessing, and your prices stay where they were until a good rate arrives. Set a minimum price on products that must never sell below a floor.
What to look for in a gold price app for Shopify
- Rate source you can see: the rate, where it came from and when it was fetched.
- The right benchmark for your market: IBJA for Indian stores, not only international spot.
- A preview before anything changes, with the working for each product.
- Rollback, so a mistake costs minutes, not a day of manual fixes.
- Your formula, not theirs: wastage, making charges in the form you use, stones, margin, tax and rounding.
- The metals you sell. KaratSync covers gold and silver; it does not price platinum.
KaratSync has a free plan for up to 5 products, so you can test your formula on real products before committing. See the KaratSync page for plans, or install KaratSync: Live Gold Prices on Shopify.
