How to Outsource SEO to India: A Vetting Checklist

Outsourcing SEO to India can make sense for a business or agency in the US, UK, Australia or Canada. Rates are typically lower than local agencies, good teams are technical, and the time difference means a lot of the work happens while you sleep. The risk is not the country. The risk is the vendor.

Cheap SEO offers are everywhere, and many of them rely on spam links, vague reports or promises nobody can keep. This checklist is what we would want a buyer to ask us, and any other offshore SEO company, before signing. It is written by Codeja Infotech, an SEO and development team in Pune, India.

Is it safe to outsource SEO to India?

Yes, if you choose the vendor carefully. SEO is done online: a team in India can audit your site, fix technical problems, improve pages, write content and work on your Google Business Profile without being in your city. What makes it unsafe is handing your website to someone who will not tell you what they are doing.

Google's own guide, Do you need an SEO?, is worth reading before you talk to any vendor. It lists questions to ask, and it warns against anyone who guarantees rankings. Everything below builds on that.

Before you contact anyone: decide what you are buying

Most bad outsourcing starts with a vague brief. Write down three things first:

  • The goal. More enquiries from one country, more sales from product pages, or visibility in AI answers. "Rank higher" is not a goal.
  • The searches that matter. Five to ten phrases your customers actually use. A vendor should refine the list, but you should start it.
  • What you already have. Access to Google Search Console and Analytics, the platform your site runs on (WordPress, Shopify or custom), and who can make changes to it.

If you are an agency outsourcing for your clients, the brief is per client site, and you also need to decide whose brand goes on the work. That model is white label SEO, and we cover it separately in what white label SEO is and what to check before you resell it.

How to choose an SEO outsourcing company in India: the checklist

Ask every vendor on your shortlist these questions, in writing. The answers, and how clearly they are given, will tell you most of what you need to know.

1. Will you send a written plan before I pay for monthly work?

A serious vendor reviews your site and sends a plan first: the searches to target, the fixes to make and the order to make them in. If the first thing you receive is an invoice for a package, the "plan" is the package, and it was not written for your site.

2. Who exactly will work on my site?

Ask for the people, not the company. Can they make technical fixes themselves (redirects, canonical tags, structured data, page speed), or only write reports for your developer? A team that also builds websites can fix the problem instead of handing you a list.

3. Will reports use my real Search Console and Analytics data?

Reports should come from your own Google Search Console and Analytics, which you own and can check yourself. Be wary of reports built only on third-party tool scores or "visibility indexes" you cannot verify. You should be able to open Search Console and see the same numbers.

4. Do you promise rankings?

The right answer is no. Nobody controls Google's results. A vendor that guarantees a first-page position is either guessing or planning to use tactics that put your site at risk.

5. How do you get links?

This question filters out most cheap offers. Packages like "1,000 backlinks" or private blog networks are link schemes under Google's spam policies, and they can do lasting damage. A good answer talks about content worth linking to, real business listings and relationships, and is honest that links take time.

6. When does your working day overlap with mine?

India's working day overlaps with UK and European mornings and Australian afternoons. For US businesses, work moves forward overnight and calls are arranged around your time zone. Ask how quickly the vendor replies and on which channel, and test it during the sales conversation.

7. What happens in the first month, exactly?

You want a list, not a promise: the audit, the first fixes, the first pages improved, and when the first report arrives. Vague first months usually become vague years.

8. Can I see your own website's SEO?

Look at the vendor's own site. Is it fast, clearly written, properly indexed and free of obvious errors? A team that cannot look after its own website will not look after yours.

Red flags that should end the conversation

  • Guaranteed rankings or "page one in 30 days".
  • Bulk backlink packages, priced per hundred or per thousand links.
  • No access to your data. The vendor wants to report from its own tools only, or asks you to hand over full ownership of your Search Console property instead of adding them as a user.
  • Unexplained changes. Anything that changes your live site should be explained before it happens.
  • Fake reviews or testimonials, on their site or offered for yours.
  • Cold outreach that says your site has dozens of "critical errors". Automated audit scores are a sales tactic, not a diagnosis.

How much does SEO cost in India?

Prices vary widely, and the cheapest offers are usually the risky ones described above. What matters is what the price includes each month: fixes or only an audit, how much content, and how reporting works. Ask for that list in the quote.

For reference, Codeja Infotech's monthly SEO starts at $300 a month, and a one-off technical SEO audit is $199, billed in US dollars via PayPal. The exact monthly figure depends on the size of your site, your competition and how much content you need, and we confirm it after reviewing your site.

How to run the first 90 days

Once you have chosen a vendor, a little structure on your side protects you:

  1. Give access, keep ownership. Add the vendor as a user in Search Console and Analytics. You stay the owner of your accounts and your domain.
  2. Agree the plan in writing. The searches, the fixes and what each month includes.
  3. Read the weekly updates. Short updates by email or WhatsApp are enough. If you do not understand one, ask; a good vendor explains in plain language.
  4. Judge the trend, not one week. Look at impressions and clicks in Search Console for the searches in your plan over months, not days.
  5. Review the plan each month. It should change as the data comes in.
